While riding the S-Bahn, I overheard a conversation among three friends in which one of them mentioned that she wanted to take a break from her studies to do a voluntary basic military service with the Bundeswehr. I wondered what motivated her and asked her if she would be open to having a photographer document her experience. This led to a feature in the ZEIT Campus magazine.
